Nope, your not wrong!
It's true many of the FWD cars use 12-14 in drag tires. I think thats for a few reasone. The small dia tires allows for a larger sidewall which somehow works better for traction. Kind of like when people at the strip take PSI out of the tires to help them get a grip. Going with the smaller rims also allows the weight to be towards the center more which is where its easier for the motor to move.
For me, the 18's work better because the stock rims on my car are onlt 15x5.5 vs 18x7. So the little 195-60's would lose grip at any slowish tight turn when the throttle is being aplied. With the 1.5 in wider rims, I am able to use wider tires which get MUCH better traction thus I stated better acceleration.
O yea, A friend put 17's on his cavalier & he stated he thinks the car feels slower with the added weight. All 4 of his rims/tires cost what 1 of my rims did new so yea, his are heavy! But, like the non V-tech civics, his car is FAR from fast anyways :o)
