The blow-off valve/turbo by-pass valve/dump valve

is a device that is located on behind the radiator. It is black and has
a small vacuum line that connects to the intake manifold, near the oil
fill. It also has two larger hoses. One connects down to the tube from
the air filter (low pressure side of the turbo), the other to the hose that
feeds to the throttle body (high pressure side of the turbo).
The small vacuum line is the control signal.
When you lift your foot of the gas pedal, the throttle plate closes. This causes
the pressure in the intake manifold, after the throttle plate, to drop lower
than the pressure before the plate. This change in pressure causes the
bypass valve to open, allowing the turbo pressure to be routed back to the
low pressure side of the turbo.
Changing the valve will not substantially increase performance, unless your
present unit is defective and leaking. I use a Viggen by-pass valve in
my Aero. Looks like the stock valve, but can handle the higher pressure that
the Viggen can produce. It's about $100 cheaper than the Forge valve and
provides the same function. But, the Forge valve is metal, not plastic, and
may be more durable.
I believe that the people who state that the Forge valve, or any other
aftermarket valve, gives a substantial performance change must have had a
defective valve before replacement.
Changing the valve is simple on a 9K, two hose clamps and a vacuum line. It should
take all of 5 minutes to change.
Good luck,
jj
