I'll be the first to say that I don't know much about ignition theory and advance and retard, etc. But here's what I know from talking to my mechanics.
Raul has done what you said, about putting in a different spring. However, I'm told this merely changes the rate of the advance/retard, not the actual amount.
What my mechanic did, and what we did on my car last week, was modify the vacuum advance unit to allow for more travel in the arm. We pried open the top of the unit, then removed the bottom spacer/plate. At the same time, the lower diaphram was destroyed and removed, but we kept the metal ring to which the lower diaphram is attached in place. Reassembled and there you go. Also removed the arm's little stop, though probably what I should have done is just cut away a bit of it at a time. Now base timing is around 27 BTDC and under boost (tested with a pump and a gauge) is about 3 BTDC.
Like I said, I don't know much about this stuff, but it's supposed to be better.
