Here is an update on the 2.1 turbo-powered '86 900S I have been building lately. For those of you who missed my initial posting on this car, it is a stock 2.1 engine and head (10:1 compression) with a turbo bolted to it. It is a test mule, so no "your gonna blow a hole in a piston" replies, please! I have a "regular" 900 Turbo to drive if that happens (note the "if"...I am an optimistic guy.)
Anyway, with an '87 Garrett turbo and 4 psi of boost, I ran 3 consecutive 16.1 @ 85 mph runs last week. That is nice and all, but I want more. So...
I installed a '91 Mitsu turbo today, and while I noticed faster spool up (of course), I was limited to 3 psi of boost due to the Pennsylvania-rusted wastegate diaphragm rod nut. So, on the way home from the shop, I pulled the hose off of the diaphragm (my car is APC-less, like an '81) and became the wastegate regulator myself. I hit 12 psi 2 times very briefly (in addition to being an optimist, I am also very curious) and noted no audible pinging. Just smooth, sweet Saab turbo whoosh. I plan to set it at about 8psi for a while, to be on the safe side. Now my question:
Will the wastegate diaphragm unit from a Garrett bolt onto a Mitsu turbo? I will find out when I get to the shop tomorrow, but I am impatient too! If not, any recommendations for alternate wastegate sources?
Feel free to email me with any specific questions regarding this project. I didn't think it was a big deal, but lots of people seem to be amazed that it even works. Well, it does! Anybody else out there done the same on either a 2.0 or 2.1?
