Eric, I have a turbo'ed N/A 2.0 as a daily driver. The engine is in a turbo car, so I used the stock turbo ignition, distributor, APC, intercooler etc.
I've gotten several emails concerning the car and I can't give anyone any info about using the EKZ ignition with this setup. Since you have put the engine in an '86 900S, I am assuming that the version of EKZ that you have has the hall effect in the distributor. I recall that you are using a turbo distributor, this means that you are able to change your base timing and the the turbo distributor gives you boost retard. The turbo distributor will also give you vacuum advance whether you have it hooked to ported vacuum (stock setup) or manifold vacuum. If you have your vacuum/pressure unit setup to react to vacuum, is there any sign of it pulling in, too much advance under cruise conditions? Did you disable the vacuum advance, either mechanically or by using a check valve, thus letting the EKZ handle the advance, instead of both pulling in advance? If both are pulling in advance, it seems to me that the EKZ is probably has to work against it's program to retard timing under low throttle angle/cruise conditions.
I know this all sounds complicated and I guess that it is, but this is why I have a hard time answering questions about this conversion when it concerns the use of the EKZ ignition system.
I'd be curious to know how the EKZ handles the boost situation with the stock distributor under boost pressures of 5-7 psi. I'd also like to know how it works with base timing at 14 BTDC, because this timing is set, with cars that have the hall effect crank mounted.
Basically I am recommending that the ignition be left totally stock for boost of 5-7 psi and for those that later decide to explore the engines potential, install a MSD BTM and a intercooler.
Any thoughts or insight that you can give concerning the EKZ ignion would be appreciated, thanks.
