Horsepower on GM cars those days was SAE Gross, not SAE net. The difference had to do with what was on the engine, things like alternators, water pumps, pwr steering units, exhaust systems, etc. About 1971 or 2 they changed to quoting net figures and the HP dropped a lot. There was a couple of years in the early 70's where they quoted both...HP did not take the radical drop in the early '70's if you compared engines with similar sizes and compression ratios. IE while the 455 in 1970 might have quoted 400 HP (SAE gross), in 71 it might have been 300HP (SAE net). the 71 Gross figure would have been like 380-390. This assumes the engines had the same displacement, compression ratios, and carburation......But none the less, the W31 option Toronado was a real tire burner and a great snow car.
