...because I was transitioning from an '85 900S (2.0/8v/na/5spd) to a '91 9000CD (2.3/16v/turbo/4spd auto).
It took some serious downshifting and standing on the accelerator to catch up, nevermind pass in the '85. I had to keep the RPMs up to get any zippy acceleration. Top end seemed to be around 90-95mph. Apparently the '85 was built for mileage, because it got 27mpg all the while. Reference books rated this engine around 110hp.
First time I tried to pass someone in the '91, I darn near nailed him in the taillights. (Next time I passed anyone, I moved into the passing lane first, THEN engaged warp drive.) I ran out of nerve around 110mph on the freeway; the 9k felt like it could do 130 without effort. References rate this model around 200hp. I'm getting 24mpg.
Now that I'm comfortable with the stock 9k's capabilities, it's not so scary exploring my limits and the car's potential. I'm planning to upgrade the tires when these (two Michelins, two Goodyears) wear out. I was very happy with Yokohamas on the 900S, excellent cornering and handling, so I expect they'll work well with the 9k. I also am toying with ideas of intake and exhaust changes, and boost modifications.
