RX-7s can be tuned VERY easily to go VERY fast. I'd not mess with that unless you've got a well tuned ride. It might have been the RX-7 owner's idea for the race in the first place; and he used the Accord owner as bait.
Yes, Rice-look and rice-speed are two different things. Sometimes, they co-exist on the same car! In such circumstances as yours, you've gotta know what he has under the hood ahead of time. It's only fair. Otherwise, it's just a pissing contest: "I can beat you!" "No, I can beat YOU!" "Well whatcya got under there?" "I'm not telling." "Well neither am I."
I got into it with a well tuned Prelude over the weekend. My car was running right, super boosting out to 22 psi (for the time being, anyway). This was at speed, on an open road in the middle of nowhere. From 55 - 125, I beat him pretty easily, but he had some serious speed on that thing. He ran it at the drag races we were both driving to, and his best time of the day was a 14.7 (I had posted he ran a 14.9 earlier, which was his best time that I saw him do. he did the 14.9 after I left, and my brother told me he ran that last time)
Be careful
Mike
