Metric Mechanic (a BMW rebuilder and tuner) has a table on their website showing life expectancy vs. rpm. They also go into what breaks down, Brian is basically right load (hitting the top of the piston with a 5 # hammer vs. a 20 # hammer) and rpm (higher values means faster mean piston speed as well as larger acceleration/forces on the connecting rod) are the too killers.
As an example to engine speed/load and longevity, my dad's BMW 325e (low rev, high efficiency) went 360 k miles on the first motor until something broke in the timing mechanism (not the timing belt). It now has 425 k miles. While I have seen pictures of the S2000 engine torn apart after several thousand miles ( I think that was due to quality problems). I also have a neighbor with a Type-R that got a new clutch at 40k miles due to the springs on the pressure plate breaking. Crotch rocket motorcycles that rev to 10k plus need to be rebuilt VERY often.
Of course I regularly take the revs near the redline in both the Saab and E-30 M3!!! Life's to short not to enjoy yourself.
