I'm one of those people that spent a lot of money on my SPG, and I continue to do so. But I've done most of my "speed testing" at racetracks - no really, racetracks that go L and R, not drag strips. I have no idea what my 1/4 mile or 0-60 times are.
All my observations are relative: in the corners my SPG hangs with Boxsters (S and regular), A4/S4, Mustang SVT, Z28, stock 911's, etc - the usual "fast" crowd at driving schools. I am not making a blanket statement about the SPG being faster than XXX, there are so many variables involved, but it ain't no slouch.
Anyway as for speed, I pull away from many of these cars on the straights when I'm driving well. There are a few exceptions (or things to think about) to Saab Turbo performance though:
1) if there is a slow corner leading onto a straight and I get stuck between redlining in 2nd or bogging down in 3rd gear. Ugh...I still lose to those shitty Z28's in a drag race - or rather, my turbo lag loses for me.
2) if the other car is a *modified* Porsche, Audi, or other high end sports sedan class car. Then it is a tossup and some interesting driving usually results. By this I mean, at my level (multiple driving schools, no racing experience) both drivers get very excited when dicing it up, and not being used to controlling that adrenalin, somebody usually makes a big mistake! Whoops!
3) if the other car is a Corvette, Viper, or other serious sports car, whether it has modifications or not. Any decent driver can go REALLY fast in this class of cars. I usually let them pass without issue, then try to follow them for as long as I can.
