I'm curious, where does it make that 170 HP? a few hundred RPM before redline, or is it pretty torquey throughout the RPM range?

I still can't figure out why Audi didn't make that engine at least a 2.0 if they were going to put a turbo on it. I can understand the rationale, but sheesh...just another 200-400 c.c. would have given that engine sooooo much more grunt, at minimally increased fuel consumption. Nothing endears an owner to car like lots of giddyup...in that market range, who cares about 2-3 less mpg, all ya gotta do is make the holes bigger. Vibration you mentioned could be a factor though, it is tough to make 4-cylinders smooth relative to other modern 6-8 engines.

Just wait till saab's AWD comes out, you can't tell me those crafty bastards haven't been playing with lots of neat ideas for a long time, just haven't had the money to put it out.



64-71 american muscle cars are remembered fondly because they had 400+ HP even though the knobs fell off the dash...
