My 1986 900S has a 2.1 NA engine w/ a turbo bolted to it. It still has EZK, not APC, but has a turbo distributor w/ boost retard, and vacuum advance defeated (as Kevin and others have recommended.) It runs great, is very quick, and gets very good gas mileage. But...
I am starting to second guess the need for a turbo distributor w/ boost retard unit. Here is why: When EZK senses knock, it retards the timing. When EZK detects sudden load increase, it retards the timing. Upon sensing knock, EZK will retard the timing in increments of 3 degrees to a total of 16 degrees of total retard. With this occurring, A) is the boost pressure to the diaphragm doing anything, and B) is it really necessary? How much retard is too much?
When I first built this car, I used the stock '86 900S distributor (no advance/retard unit on top) and the car ran well too (only had 4 psi at the time.) Any input on this would be appreciated...it seems like most people w/ turbocharged NA motors use APC. Anyone out there have EZK and a turbo?
