It is the boost pressure change that changes the model type!

What it was matters little compared to what it is now! Was LPT, is now FPT!
With 98 octane gas, you should not be experiencing ping or knock. How was the bottom end to begin with? I hope it was/is solid! High boost gets very hot, hence the necessity of intercooling and improved air intake. This could be the culprit as well (i.e you need water injection or improved intercooling).
Peak and fade with sustain can come from any number of sources. Atmosphere is a huge player. Lots of humid dense air = crappy boost and inconsistent performance. Also, altitude has a major effect. See Jim Miller on that one (Talladega900)
Anyway, the exhaust is your biggest enemy right now (only if you have a catalytic converter) The ECU is likely mapped to fire back fast and furious style when knock is detected.
Good luck, and sorry for the silly debate. I think we both know what we mean!
