I'm afraid that their message is pretty consistent with other firms. In fact, their message is fairly tame with respect to some I have heard. I have tinkered with a couple of vehicles (motorcycles and cars) from different manufacturers (Aprilia, BMW, Saab). BMW Motorcycle group is the worst...basically claiming that if you mess around with the chip, you void the warranty...period. Aprilia, makes a statement close to what Saab sent you...in essence, if the mod causes a problem then the warranty will not fix it. i.e. if you add piles more boost and horsepower and blow a head gasket, then it might not be covered. If your climate control goes out...its still covered as it has nothing to do with the ECU.
It would seem that if the dealer is making the claim that the warranty is not voided by the performance mod, and they are the ones that make the warrant claim determination (as per Saab USA's claim), then they would be favorable towards making sure you didn't have to pay anything out of pocket. Obviously, that's just a guess on my part and I'd certainly get something in writing from them.
