No, that will NOT work...
ALL stickers on the doors of Classic 900s from 84/85 on will show the word 'AERO' Following that will be an abbreviation for the Swedish 'yes' or 'no', or 'with' or 'without', which escape me at the moment.
My 1986 900t has the word 'Aero' on the door sticker, and it never was an 'Aero' or SPG.
The only foolproof way is to call Saab's Customer Assistance Center at 1-800-955-9007. Then you must have them look up the 'model code' in the Warrantee database. The VIN is needed, but decoding the VIN alone will only tell you that it's a turbo 3 door with a manual trans.
The model code for an SPG is '943M' meaning 900, trim/mdel 4 (spg), 3-doors, and Manual transmission.
You can get a preliminary indication from the paint codes and trim codes, at least for 1986 and later, when the color combos of the SPG were unique to the SPG.
