.... lost power when switching from premium to regular ...
The Tronic monitors the ionization resistance across the plug gaps and it avoids knocking by avoiding a state that leads to knocking. Engines that use knock sensors get right onto the edge of knocking so they may be able to tune more agressively. But you need to compare different turbo charged engines to each other to resolve the Trionic VS knock sensor issues.
The turbo charged engines are have much higher effective compression ratios when on boost at WOT compared to any normally asperated engine. So turbo charged engines should probably be expected to have larger power losses on regular fuel. The effective compression ratios are up near to 20:1 for higher boost engines.
And the article did not tell us what weather conditions needed to be corrected. Turbo's are very sensitive to temperatures and the correction factors used for NA engines might be rather useless in a comparision like this. We don't know if the Saab in the test had a T5 or T7 ECU, that would make a difference as well.
And the engines with more combustion chamber deposits would also suffer in this comparison of fuels. Techron Concentrate anyone?
