The ignition and fuel delivery maps are set up for the anti-knock level of premium fuels. In other words pretty agressively, how else do you generate 330+ hp from a 3.something liter N/A engine.
At 7000 or more rpm things get very hot in the combustion chamber, even in a N/A engine. Due to the heat generated pre-ignition with regular fuel is nearly unavoidable, therefore the knock sensors (accelerometers really) pick the tell-tale signal of knock and retard the timing, which reduces the torque generated for each expansion stroke. BTW, the compression ratio for the M3 is above 10.5, I don't remember the exact number.
