Mass State ticket wastes my time...

If anyone has some insight on this It's more then welcome.
I got a ticket in Plymouth Ma (rt 3) in May. I contested it and had my hearing today. Thinking that I would be facing a judge I had all my documentation straight in hopes of grilling the cop. Well, it turns out in Mass that the 'first step' is to go in front of a court magistrate. This person cant do Sh*t. She heard from the prosecutor (who just read the citation) and from me (who argued valid points and flaws in the citation) then asked me if I wanted to appeal. Appeal? I have yet to see a judge! Anyway, I live in VT and spent 3.5 hrs driving down and 3.5 getting back for a 3 min hearing! Now they want to sched. another court date in which the cop must be present. The only problem with this is that I work on the road and will be gone until x-mas and then going to school in Jan. I really have no time to do this! I had already taken the time to miss work (I was in Atlanta) and come home so I could go fight it.
What kind of options do I have? Unless I get lucky and they ask me to come back when I actually have off I'm screwed!
Please, offer any advise!
Thanks
liam :-)
