Last night Mike (WASSAAB), Michael Gottlieb and I went to Maryland Int'l Raceway in Southern MD for one last drag race for the year. I will let him tell you more about that, but I did snap off a personal and car-best 15.30 @ 94 mph in the '86 notchback LPT. But...
On the way home from the track, we got into it with some Ricers and a Mustang GT, hitting triple digit speeds on deserted and straight Rt.5...I heard pinging at 10 psi, which hasn't been typical...then we stopped for gas and I saw the great plumes of white smoke pouring from the tailpipe. Underhood, coolant was everywhere (blew past the expansion tank cap). Got about halfway home running at 190 F, when it ran out of coolant and pegged at 240. Shut off immediately, coasted off the approaching beltway exit for Andrews Air Force Base, and parked in a shopping center lot (virtually empty except for a black 1989 SPG (!) w/ jumper cables in the back seat. Is this anyone's from Saabnet???) This is at 1 am. I will retrieve it today.
I knew going in to this project that 10:1 compression and a turbo would probably do in the head gasket first...it made it 6,000 miles. Time for copper. Now you know why I always recommend a new head gasket to those who ask about turbo'ing their N/A cars!
Brad and Boudreau: what head gaskets are you using on your 10:1 turbo motors?
