You can re-use the stock 8mm hardware to mount your rear sway bar. Just torque it to about 20 ft-lbs. The instructions that came with my SAS rear sway bar had a mis-print saying torque to 40 ft-lbs. WRONG! I stripped the 8mm at 30 ft-lb or so.

After stripping the stock 8mm bolts, I replaced the stock hardware on my SAS rear anti-sway bar with 3/8” hardware. According to my handy fastener guides, the 3/8” fasteners would provide 40-50% greater clamping load than the 8mm fasteners. I am not saying that the original size fasteners won’t hold the new anti-sway bar. I just wanted to see whether the holes in the anti-sway bar and axle assembly would take 3/8” hardware, and if it did then I gained some extra clamping force.

The new hardware fit with no problems. I used 3/8-24 by 1-1/2” long Grade 8 bolts, 3/8-24 Grade 8 nuts, with 3/8” Grade 8 washers under the bolt head and the nut (total cost of 3/8” hardware, about $3 at the local hardware store). I also used Loctite 242 medium strength blue thread locker on the first 1/2” of bolt thread.

The holes in the SAS rear anti-sway bar and the Saab axle assembly are large enough to accept the 3/8” hardware. I found it easiest to install the 3/8” fasteners while the anti-sway bar was loosely held to the axle assembly by the original hardware. Just replace the original hardware with the 3/8” hardware on one side at a time. First I installed all the 3/8” fasteners loosely to allow movement for alignment of all the fasteners. Then I torqued the 3/8” fasteners to about 20 FT-LB (pretty tight with a standard 3/8” ratchet). Finally I torqued the 3/8” fasteners to 30 FT-LB using a torque wrench.

By very careful working around the rear brake line and rear ABS sensor cables not the damage anything while holding the nuts with a wrench.
