For your enjoyment I present my highly cynical view on brake warping:
Saab does not control the how, what and whens of making brake rotors or
pads or calipers - they just specify an initial supplier and a part
number. When replacing brakes on your Saab, you typically have the OEM
one (unless it has changed) plus another 6-8 companies to choose from.
These parts are not all made the same way. There is no higher law of car
parts manufacturing *especially in the aftermarket supply business*. Just
lots of competition and incentive to make the parts for the least amount
of money (AKA cut corners to maximize profits).
The "good" and "bad" companies are identified mainly by hearsay, so it
depends on who you talk to for answers. Basically the "good" ones have
less out-of-the-box failures than the "bad" ones, but they all have
failures. Due to casting flaws that are completely out of your control,
a rotor can warp at 0, 100mi, 1,000mi - and there is nothing you can do
about it. I don't profess to know what the flaws are...just they happen
(a lot) and no car or brand of car is immune from it.
Follow the tips in Kevin K's post and you will be doing all *you* can do
to save your brakes -- whether they are stock or drilled or slotted.
