Sadly, the way they "display" every car in the scrap yards out here ruins it as a complete purchase item. First, they haul them in on a fork lift device which often tears up the undercarriage. Then they plop them down on four 2' tall metal pillars about 6" diameter, near each wheel. The weight often causes buckling, effectively ruining the chassis. I'm fairly certain they don't want the chassis removed, as that gives them additional scrap metal when they eventually crush it. Otherwise, I'm there with the check book and tow truck.
Frequently, they do set drivable cars aside in a seperate corner for sale. Those cars you know can at least start and run. Any car sitting out in the parts lot, you never know why they're there. That SPG - could have a dead motor, or a bum tranny. Or the owner just couldn't get it started for one simple "SAAB" reason or another, and then it accumulated a sizable number of unpaid parking tickets, only to be impounded by the police, who then sold it as scrap after a failed auction attempt.
The 82 900T I bought and restored last December - I would have never bought it as it was (bashed front end, seriously faded paint, balding tires on bent rims) if the engine or tranny didn't run. That's the only reason I did buy it. The engine wouldn't quit despite it's condition demanding otherwise. That amazed me more than anything (seeing how abused it was) when the engine fired right up and sat there smoothly idling. I saw that, turned to my trusty old n/a 900 with 285k miles and said, "Your life is effectively over, cuz I'm gonna take all that's good off you and put it on that new old car over there. And then you're going to the junk yard." Drove it there myself - with no front end, no interior, no dash. Not even brakes (parking brake only)!
