What a load of xxxx, unless this is a switching converter which is extremely unlikely the charge rate is limited by the rated output of the alternator itself. The reg will allow max charge rate until the voltage setpoint is reached.
As far as I am aware there is only one advantage. Automotive regulators have an inbuilt temp sensor to adjust the voltage setpoint. Lead acid batteries need a higher voltage at lower temps to properly charge. Conversely at higher temps the voltage needs to be reduced to avoid overcharging. The disadvantage with inbuilt regs is that the temp can be higher here than at the battery. Ideally the reg should be located adjacent to the battery. In practice I think that the temp at the alternator and the battery would be pretty much the same on a 9000.
