Yes, simply put in a high performance air filter... seriously. I have a 91 9000 cd turbo, 2 weeks ago I install a k&n filter. I bought a special order cone style #rr-3001, it was about 70 bucks + shipping. Mine is a 3 inche with red anodized cover at end. Check it out at their website. All I did was remove the old filter and the bracket thingy that mounted 2 the air mass sensor. So I essentially dumped all the oem air intake crap and the new filter is positioned and lays behind the headlight, lots of fresh air there. Now all I hear is the whinning of the turbo and the, I guess the blow off valve when I abruptly let of the gas... I love it. It sounds awesome, the closet thing I can compare it to is all those big diesel trucks and buses when they shift gears you can clearly hear the turbo blow-off valve in action. So basically discontinue using the stock oem air intake box and install a hi-po air filter and you will get very cool results. I wish I could record a sample of the sounds I hear 4 u. After u do the said performance upgrade You will always try to keep a window cracked or sunroof ajar just so you can get to clearly hear the sounds of the turbo doing its thing.
Oh yeah, so far no prob with wet weather and the new filter, but I doubt any prob will arise from the current place of my new filter since I've seen lots of rice cars with similiar installations. But until I drive threw a bad storm w/o a hitch will I rest-assured of current upgrade. No prob under rain/drizzle conditions so far.
By the way b4 upgrade I heard absolutely no sound of the blow-off valve, after I hear it loud and clear, and the turbo whine has enhanced abit, too. You can really hear the filtercharger at work!
