picture the two set ups: one, the stock filter housing, (in almost any application), two, (for the sake of argument), the stock fliter in place, just removing the housing itself. most stock housings are set up to provide the coldest air possible, also to provide enough restriction to maximize low end torque (where most of the driving takes place). now, the open filter (same size for the sake of argument), instead of having to pull air through the restrictive housing, it has a full 360 degree range with which to pull in air. however, from a stop or low speed, there is more of a chance of having a hotter engine compartment. therefore there will more than likely be a noticable loss in power at the bottom end. however, on the highway, or when the car is moving fast enough to push air through the engine compartment, the open filter will be more than likely to pull in a larger volume of cold air (that is provided that the filter is not mounted behind something hot, like the turbo). the testing done on a dyno could yeild a lower top end, unless there was a fan set up to move enough air through the engine compartment to compensate for the hotter running temps. thus, as mentioned before, it would seem the best set up would be the open filter with cold box to prevent hot air from entering.
