Here in the dry climates of LA,CA, the biggest common air filter problem is lots of dust and standard road grime. Perhaps because of the dryness, I find that I can give my filter a good banging to, use a dull flat blade inside the fins, plus blow air inside out, thus removing a good bit of "accumulants." If I do this chore over one spot on the sidewalk I'll see a nice pile of stuff. I did that with my 900 N/A and essentially tripled the filter life. With my turbo I'll give it a cleaning at 6 months, then replace it at 12.
