Hello All -
After years (and years) of owning a 1990 Supra, 1985 MR2, SVO Mustangs, XR4Tis, Conquests, CRXsi, 1987 300ZX turbo - and even a recently sold 1987 Z52 Vette (auto) - I have finally - finally - purchased - believe it or not - a car I have coveted for over six years: a silver, one-owner, 5-spd., 1986 Saab 9000 Turbo. Purchased it for $2200 about two months ago, with a documented 98.3kmi on the car, even had orig. window sticker, along with manuals, receipts, etc.
The "Saab Experience" had been good, not great (headliner, visor, 2nd-gear graunch), but for $2200 I believe that this was a very good deal.
This car is *fast*. Even after owning and driving my SVOs, 300ZX turbo and XR4ti (many, many years ago), I can safely say that from 60mph to 100mph, my 9000T is significantly faster.
My point: there is *no way* this car is making only 160bhp, as stated in my old Road & Track magazine. No way. It is making atleast 20bhp more than this.
Why?: I have the orig. (1985) issue of Road and Track, featuring a road test of the 1986 Saab 9000T: 0 to 60mph in 7.6 seconds. 1/4-mile in 15.6 seconds. 0 to 100mph in 20.4 seconds. This car weighs no less than 3050lbs on a full tank. I weigh in at about 190lbs. I have *easily* duplicated these figures. Easily. As a matter of fact, and I know that this may sound a bit juvenille, on an admittedly cold, windless evening, on a level, one-mile stretch, near a bridge in Fremont (CA), I got to 100mph in 19 seconds. Another run?: 20 seconds.
I have analyzed data from lots of my old (1985 to 1989) magazines: Eclipse (turbos), Maserati Bi-turbo, 300Zx turbo, Mustang GTs - all with 180bhp to 210 bhp - all with power-to-weight ratios of about 15.2 to 16. All with acceleration figures very similar to my Saab's. As a matter of fact, my old, 1990 (5-speed) Supra, with a *supposed* 200bhp, had a pwr of 17.5 and a 1/4-mi of about 16 seconds. I know for a fact, that my Saab would eat that car for breakfast.
Gearing alone cannot account for this, as I have easily kept up with early Eclipse turbos and even mid-nineties 325is.
Your comments would be very welcome.
Thanks for hearing me out.
Steve
