I'd like to see documentation that 95% of car amps do not have regulated power supplies, and 99.9% of home amps. It may depend upon your defination of regulated, but any amp that uses a full wave rectifier followed by capacitance across the input(which is all amps/receivers that I have seen here at the shop) has regulation.
I realize most amps are just loafing along, but there is absolutely no need for a 1200 watt amp in a car, unless your goal is to win decibel drag type competitions. I have _only_ 300w rms and my car can reach 137 dB, which is 7dB above the threshhold of pain, you're telling me your need more than that just to maintain an acceptable dynamic range and power reserve? Further, the idea of having adequate reserves to prevent clipping is well known and valid, but generally applies only to tweeters, not {sub}woofers, which are much more sturdy. I've never heard of a woofer going out before you have severe audible distortion for an extended period of time (and with 1200 watts on tap, your ears will give out first).
Too much power is better than too little, but beyond a certain amount is overkill, especially in a small space such as the car, where the frequencies below 100 Hz are greatly boosted naturally.
