He probably just built the shit out of his motor without even really caring for it...as you said, he had a turbo and was probably pushing like 20 PSI without a built motor because with a well built motor, things don't fly out like his motor did.
My friend had a b16 hatch but decided to go LS/VTEC where you put a VTEC head on a 1.8 liter LS/RS integ block. He built it really badly and in a week his motor blew up. My other friend has the same setup with USDM Type R internals and it's been running strong for a LONG time.
