Well, what was really fun for me was going for a ride in his car, an early 90's Civic hatchback, with the usual red valve cover, before the serious stuff was added. It had (originally) fart exhaust, tinfoil chrome wheels, red trimmed "custom" interior, you know. He said he had modified a whole bunch of stuff. I'm not sure what exactly he did, but by the way he was recounting it to me and his friends were like "Yeah" this and "yeah" that, I guess it was some sort of big deal to them. They were blabbing about VTEC and whatnot. Keep in mind this was about a week after my SPG first went on the road. They were trying to educate me about how it "kicks in" at a certain RPM and whatnot, and how this car was "hella fast yo" and whatnot. By this time we're at a stoplight, and the kid starts revving the living piss out of the poor Honda (they suck, but I still felt pity for it). We're talking like 8000rpm here, and the fart exhaust was buzzing and popping like crazy and people were looking at us funny. Then he dropped the clutch at something definately over 6000rpm.
The tires chirped, grabbed the pavement, and the car sort of just accelerated like any other Honda my grandmother would drive, except for the auditory hallucination of a pack of angry bees from behind. He was like "Did you feel the VTEC kick in?" and, totally truthfully and ignorantly, I said "Was I supposed to feel something? That's *it*?" It chirped second gear, but hey...
<a week later>
I took Mr. Civic driver through a shopping center parking lot (Aviation Mall, for those who know) at about 3am, no security in sight. In hindsight, that's a good thing. I came to a dead stop at one end of a particularly long part of the lot, and nailed it. Let's just say that when the turbo suddenly caught some wind at about 3500 in First, and the front tires broke loose (this was before I knew all you fine folks here, and how bad this was for my tranny), Mr. High Performance Civic Driver gasped and sorta grabbed the door handle. I caught second gear. The tires didn't chirp, they *howled*, for about 50 feet. I backed off at around 50mph, and the next thing I knew, he was asking me about adding a turbo to the Civic.
I told him he could pretty much forget about it. The above post about a chunk of something coming through the hood was about the above driver and his Civic, after he added a turbo. Can you say "Saab envy"?
