I don't know you model, but you will most likely have a bypass valve. I expect that is would be another basc Bosch unit. It will have a 1" 25mm line from it to somewhere between the air filter box and the turbo compressor. These valves open via a vac line to the throttle body or perhaps the manifold. So it is open when at idle or rev overruns. If these valves are open to atmopsphere by removing the 1" disharge return line, then unfiltered air can enter the engine. If the vehicle uses an air mass meter, then removal of the return line, or replacement of the bypass valve with a dump valve, the the engine may not run right when air is dumped.
If the bypass valve is not working right, then what you hear could be damaging shock waves which can harm the turbo. That is why the bypass valve is fitted. Yes, there are some performance reasons as well. Check the integrity of the vac line at both ends. These can split.
