As GM said, there are so many SUVs (pickup trucks and minivans as well) here, with capabilities far below the average sedan. For anything having a center of gravity that high, 100 mph is damn fast. Not to mention tires that huge, frontal area that large, and probably electronically limited to 105-110 mph anyway! What do you expect though, when manufacturers equip their vehicles with 'S' speed rated tires, T at the most.
My first and previous car was a '79 Honda Accord, and going downhill with a strong tailwind, I managed to get it up to 90 once! It didn't like anything over 70 mph much though. Now that I have my 9000T, 100 mph isn't that fast anymore, and it could certainly be considered a cruising speed, if indeed there were anyplace that traffic and the law permitted. Even if the law permitted, I have to travel at least 60 miles from my residence to find a location where the amount of traffic will permit such speeds at any time except in the middle of the night, when you don't really want to be going that fast anyhow.
Also, I believe that many even so called sports sedans or sports coupes (except some from Europe) still come with H rated tires, good only up to 130 sustained, so racing over 135 isn't really a safe option. Then again, I believe that the average American has no idea what speed rating is, and probably thinks any tire can always go as fast as your car, safely.
I love a good sprint up to 135 as much as anyone else (sustaining those speeds - I will leave that for airplanes and race cars, thank you!), but like I said, traffic just doesn't permit it, nor is there any need for it. Have to learn to have fun around the twisties instead, in these parts.
