I'm not sure which Jacobs setup Damien had, but mine is also 50kV. The deal with the Jacobs systems (as opposed to a simple coil all by itself) is that they adjust the voltage, and only send as much as the current situation demands. Jacobs told me that could be anywhere from 15-50kV.
I've indeed noticed that the cap/rotor tends to be wearing a bit faster, but not dramatically so.
It should also probably be noted that it's not just the voltage that can cause advanced where, it's the current, which combined with the voltage and spark gap, will give you the total energy of the spark. Though my Jacobs system can put out 50kV, the total energy is something like 1/4 of their top of the line system in terms of spark energy (millijoules).
All that said, whats the advantage to putting on a coil that uses 60kV all the time? I don't even need that much at 20 psi, so long as I keep the gap within about 40% higher than stock...
To Eric,
As I understand it, the only parts of the ignition system which sees the output of the coil secondary are the cap, rotor, and the plugs. There's no connection from the secondary coil output to any other part on the distributor or control electronics, that I'm aware of..
