thermocouple and pressure gauge

I talked to a professor concerning measuring in/out air temps of the intercooler. I can use small diameter thermocouple wire for fast response. Since I only have one voltmeter I can run the wires in series to measure the difference. He says I can just twist the ends of the wire together and clamp it in the airstream. A little solder wouldn't hurt either. It sounds pretty cheap and easy! I believe type J will work. The only drawback is I won't know actual input temp..only the difference. Maybe it's time for a new voltmeter. Another idea is to measure before/after pressure loss from turbo to manifold. I need a (cheap) differential pressure gauge. Any ideas on that? This relates to getting before/after data of my 9000 intercooler install. Damm, I'd like to have that labview data recorder for my laptop!
