i am becoming a vampire. my work schedule has moved from day to night (night watches for the next month). so i have been finding ways to occupy myself on the off nights to keep the schedule right. tonight i tackled the exhaust manifold gasket. the other night while under the car, i noticed black debris peaking out from around the exhaust manifold iwo #1 and #4 cylinder exhaust ports. i have also been noticing a decrease in performance over the past few weeks. so tonight i decided was the night. i also wanted to do some 'housekeeping while things were apart. so i picked up some 1200 degree high temp paint and i had some heat wrap in the garage (from a previous failed attempt at wrapping the exhaust manifold). to make a long story short, i pulled it apart, cleaned up the manifold, put a couple light coats of paint, and then wrapped it. once back together and tightened up, i took it for a test drive. oh yeah... i must say the power has returned. the nice strong pull is back. also, is a change in boost. for only having taken one drive (now i'm off to bed), the wrap seems to have quite a benefit. wereas before (even with a good gasket) boost would be solid around 2900-3000 rpm, now the boost starts ramping up about 4-500 rpm earlier. once warmed up, around 24-2500rpm, boost was climbing pretty quickly and steadily. i am pleased with the change. although, the wrap does smell a bit while it is burning in.
so if i can make two recommendations:
1. check your exhaust manifold gasket if you have been running high boost pressures. next time i change it, i'll go copper to prevent future blow outs.
2. wrap your exhaust manifold. keeping the heat in until it hits the turbo definitely makes a difference by amplifying the heat driving aspect of its operation. but, don't go overboard. i have heard from a few that too much wrap (a few layers) can cause premature failure of the gasket and possible cracking of the manifold. one layer seems to be plenty. i will know better in a few days how things are rolling.
until then......
