Seems like we all would have heard about this before. I think your dealer may be trying to pull your leg. Of course I could be wrong and the only difference for '01 is the ECU. In 1999, I believe there was a turbo, intercooler, and ECU difference, but that may be old news starting with the 2000MY changes, which included the new T7 trionic system and a new intake.
But stick with me for a moment. My first question is, how are you going to know you got the extra 20hp? You probably won't be able to tell the difference by the seat of your pants. Be wary of the placebo affect. I would do before and after dyno to be sure my money went where it was supposed to. I couldn't tell much difference, if any, between my HOT and the base back in '99. My second question is, why wouldn't you consider the Abbott upgrade or external boost controller? If you issue is warranty, is you dealer going to protect you in this case? Will he replace your head gasket if it goes due to this mod under warranty?
There are people on this board that have both of those upgrade that can tell an immidiate difference and they have both been proven. Do you trust your dealer that much?
Sorry I offered more questions than answers. Something to think about.
If I were going to spend the money...I go with Abbott or the like.
