I was able to perform some experiments and found that the stock SE springs on my 9-3 with a stiffer rear swaybar handles just as well if not better and is more comfortable than the 9-3 with just the Viggen springs and stock rear swaybar. I live in NH where there are lots of bumpy roads.
I should have mentioned that replacing the front swaybar is generally a no-no because as you said; it increases understeer.
Uprating just the rear one on the 9-3 leads to a more neutral handling personality with minor understeer. I had the same experience with another car that I used to autocross. I ended up putting the stock front swaybar back in.
I can't give any useful input specific to 900s or 9000s so remember that this info is specific to my experiences with the 9-3.
