I just did this in my '88 SPG and it has made a monstrous difference. I also have a T3/T4 turbo on the car with the previous stock setup and it has been allowed to breath properly with the larger IC. I'll have to ask my mechanic what year the IC was from but I can tell you that it slipped in front of the AC coil without any mods to either the IC or bodywork and I kept the bottom of the IC about 6" lower than the bottom of the bumper for airflow reasons and for ease of routing the piping.
The piping is another story. Since the IC is a bottom inlet/outlet the pipes from the output side of the turbo have been pieced/routed over the distributor and between the battery and the opening where the AC lines run under the passenger headlight. I had installed a thinner battery to keep it away from the heat of the turbo so there was plenty of room. On the outlet side, and with the stock IC removed there is ample opportunity to run the piping through the opening where the stock IC was and up to the intake. I have a K&N filter on mine as well and have hung it as low as possible to take in the cold incoming air from the old IC opening.
What I ideally want to do is turn the turbo outlet so that I can run the IC piping down and under the front subframe (shorter run and in one piece)to the new IC inlet side and do a similar treatment with the IC outlet piping so that I can use the stock IC opening as an enclosed box for the incoming air to the K&N.
I'll take some pix and try to post soon. This is a mod I wish I'd done years ago.
