sounds about right. you won't get varying timing at different engine rpms or loads with the stock setup (even the aid). it's strictly driven off vacuum and boost pressure. so you get what you saw with the hand pump.

from the sounds of it, you are a couple degrees too retarded at max pressure. you want to be more in the 10-11 dbtdc frame. this will give you more power and you should be able to do it with the stock setup, depending on your fueling and max boost. you can get this point by advancing your entire timing curve (meaning more initial advance) until your max timing retard is around 10-11 dbtdc. but this may be too much initial advance (i.e. 21-22). the other option is to keep initial timing where it is at and put a pressure regulating valve inline to the aid to stop retard at a certain point. meaning set the regulating valve to the pressure where the aid retards to 10-11 dbtdc.

i tinkered with the msd btm and pressure regulating valve for many hours before i started to fully understand what was going on. you really need the regulating valve inline with both the aid and the msd btm to stop timing retard from continuing to increase.
