An interesting scenario, on which I'd like some informed opinions...
Some time ago, I had the front suspension apart (can't remember why - I enjoy tinkering with my '96 9K Aero so much that it could have been one of a number of things). Anyway, I got the wheel alignment "something like" and intended to have it adjusted as soon as possible.
Well, you know what it's like when you have things to do...
Anyway, although I knew it wasn't quite right (not much steering response around the straight-ahead position), traction on corners was excellent! I mean, I could almost floor it while going round even a small roundabout and it wouldn't want to slide or understeer - it would just power round. I really felt I was getting my money's worth from my Abbott suspension and Bridgestone S-03s.
Well, last weekend, I finally got round to having the alignment checked. Apparently it was toed-in by about 5mm! I had them set it to the 1mm toe-in recommended by Abott and the steering now feels more stable and precise around the straight-ahead position.
However, the edge has very much gone from the cornering traction. Too much throttle on a bend will cause it to slide now. It's still good, but nowhere near as good as I'd come to expect.
My question is (you were wondering whether I'd ever get round to it...): is this what I should expect - that "too much" toe-in should give much better traction on corners at the expense of straight-line response (and, presumably, tyre wear)? I hadn't been having straight-line traction or torque-steer problems, though.
I'm toying with the idea of luring my unsuspecting colleagues into a track day and this sort of handling would be a definite advantage, not to mention that I don't think any of them can really grasp what a 250hp (conservatively-estimated) 9K Aero could really do alongside their Audis (only an S3), Volkswagens and Peugeots. I think they believe they would leave it for dead in the twisties...
