last thursday went to get the wolf system dialed in on the dyno and i must say i am pleased with the results. however, not everything went as planned.
first of all, i ran out of injector, twice. started with 30# and then went to 42#. 42# injectors about maxed out at 13 psi boost, so i'm only at 79% load. my goal is to run back up where i was with the stock ecu, 18 psi. so before that, i'll need bigger injectors.
new redline is at 7200 and all pulls were up to just about 7000. since injectors were not up to the task, we left boost at 13-14 psi and tuned to that level. we were able to get the fuel curve pretty flat and slightly rich. for now, wot runs are around 11-12:1. eventually we will move it up to around 12.5:1 and leave it there. normal running has been tuned (and is in constant progress) to stoich. also, a very conservative timing curve was used for boost. starting around 23 dbtdc at atmos and then retarding to 11.6 by 16 psi.
for reference, my previous timing curve was 19.5 at atmos and retarding to 11.5 at 18 psi. fuel curve with stock ecu, rrfpr and 30# injectors was lumpy and lean, getting pretty close to stoich during wot run.
i'm still not to the point of tuning for max power, but i did reach a max of 213 hp at the wheels. this is at 13 psi, rich fuel curve and conservative timing curve. it is also 13 hp more than i was running before at 18psi. max torque was somewhere in the same ballpark. hp curve only dropped off when i let off my foot around 7000 rpm, and not before. if i wanted to run it up higher, i'm sure i could prolong the power curve. fwiw, with a 7000 rpm limit, i pegged the speedo on the dyno in 4th gear. the cams and gear have certainly helped raise the limit.
street runs following the dyno show pretty facinating results. the car definitely pulls strong and hard, but not in the same fashion as the stock set up. gone is the jam the right foot down, wait, and then get yanked. now i can stomp on the gas and the car picks right up and takes off. it continues to accelerate hard for as long as i hold the foot down. with higher redline, i can spin it up to 6500'ish and then shift and still be in the power band. the exciting part is, there is still a lot of power left in her. by gradually leaning out the mixture and getting closer to 12.5:1, i should get quite a bit more. also, slowly advancing timing will also lead to more power.
for now, i'll continue daily tuning in the normal driving range and be content with 13 psi. once i come across some larger injectors, i'll get back on the dyno, bring the boost up, timing up and fuel down, and see what i get. i'm pretty sure it will be a few weeks at least.
my experience has definitely made me realize the how inadequate the stock system is. for those looking into large power increases, it definitely makes sense to do it right and jump beyond the stock ecu, imho. i'll try to keep everyone posted on further tuning. till then...
