I also have an 87 SPG and have moved the filter into the fender area.
Here's what I did: I got the idea from this Jouko fellow in wherever. I had a K&N #ru-2820 and I got a 3" aluminum tube that just the right bend in it from a scrap iron and metal co. I bought a rubber joint from a speed shop and attached it to the AMM w another clamp, cut a U shaped hole in t he fender wall and clamped the K&N onto the other end of the 3" pipe so that the filter is in the well. I moved the charcoal caniter into the area that the stock air box was and used it's bracket( the canister) to mount it there. I am having a metal fabricator bend a piece of thin aluminum to make a shield that the pipe will go thru and keep the hotter air out of the fender well. I 'm about to move the cruise control to the area above the battery to get it out of the flow of air. Next I a thinking about putting a louvered vent in the outside just above the bumper behind the turning light to force more air in. Have'nt made up my mind about cutting into the fender yet. Don't know whether water from rain would get in and ruin the filter. Bought the vent at a boat yard and it is black plastic and is about 7-8 in long by 3 wide. Probably would cut the vent to about 4-5 inches. As i see it now I am getting the coolest air now into the engine and I can feel the difference from the stock setup. Hope this helps.
