K&N does not recommend that their filters be use for severely dusty applications. They also recommend additional oil spray in severe duty if the filter is not then being cleaned.
There is no evidence that I have seen that there are problems with the K&N filters in 'normal' use.
I would not want a K&N cone filter directly exposed to rain. That would blast the trapped dirt right through the filter. So a cone filter behind the grill would not be a good idea.
The amount of dirt in that study is very extreme for a vehicle on street duty. That article is talking about ounces of dirt! When I clean my K&N, every year at manbe 25000 miles, there is not much dirt, no caking of any kind. The backside of the element is red and looks clean. Oil and grease smeared on the filter box lid as a tell-tale shows no trace of dirt. I recently has the filter box outlet exposed and swabbing it with a white tissue disclosed no dirt film, however that area was not oiled or greased to trap such stuff. Most of the dirt in my K&N appears to be tire dust.
You cannot compare the surface area of a paper barrier filter to a depth filter like the K&N or a foam filter. You have to look at the wetted surface area of the oiled threads and fibers. Air can navigate through this, but the dirt particles get stuck in the oil. And the dirt particles don't turn with air flow and they are inertially separated from the main stream air flows whenever the air flow is turning to get around the screens and cotton threads and fiber. Similar things are going on with oiled foam filters.
