...but also keep in mind 300 hp in something the size and weight of a Suzuki Swift _would_ be a different matter altogether than with something more akin to a Viper. Would be d*mn scary if you ask me...

Um, the point. I guess I want to say that a hp number alone says precious little. It's torque vs. weight that largely determins performance, and more importantly the spread of that torque over a large, usable rev range, and than of course it's a matter of transferring the grunt to the ground...
There's a 300 kW supercharged Holden that's the new hero car in Australia, and the best 0-60 they can get out of it is 6.1 secs - which as luck would have it is the same time as a 220 hp Trent Saab Stage 1 tuned c900T16 or a bone stock Scooby WRX...
Give me a non-AC, non-electric sunroof C900 or a stripped-out 9k that weighs about 1,200 kgs when you play your cards right, a fat, flat torque curve that reaches a 300 hp peak somewhere in the low 6,000s and the means to get all that power to the ground with reasonable efficiency, and I'll have something that will be very, very hard to beat by _any_ car that is anywhere near practical to use and seats four in comfort. I mean, the hot saloon/estate ticket right at the moment is the Audi RS6 with 450 hp and 560 or so Nm. Sounds impressive, right? Right, but the thing weighs 1,900 kgs. So even if some German tuner manages to get something in the low/mid 500's from it without compromising low-end response and reliability (assuming another stack of Deutschmarks - uh, sorry, Euro's - on top of the not insubstantial list price), it's still in the same ballpark as some of the modified 900's and 9000's out here. OTOH never, EVER try to race a bike-engined Westfield (one of the better known Seven-clones), 'cause even with a 140 or so hp, 0.9 liter Fireblade engine it will eat you for brakfast, lunch and dinner no matter what kind of hp you get from your Saab... Try 3.2 secs 0-60. That's what a weight in the low 400 kgs, RWD and sticky tires do...

For the c900, there's only so much you can do with upping the boost and pouring in more fuel. You'll add more midrange torque -already the car's forte- which is addictive, but will overload the trans and front wheels very soon beyond the 220-240 hp afforded by a good, basic tuning package (APC, fuel, basic intake/exhaust mods). IMO the next stages would have to focus on extending that torque further up the rev range (where it normally tapers off), and improving responsiveness in the lowest, unboosted rev range. Look for instance at the 1985 EV-1 specs: 285 hp @6,500 rpm is backed by a relatively unspectacular 334 Nm (246 lb/ft) @ 3,500 rpm. No wondfer they could get away with a stock c900 gearbox without it grenading on the very first test drive... ;-)
