I agree with z and BillJ - it's torque, not horsepower, that kills autoboxes. Horsepower is just torque multiplied by RPM, and the tranny doesn't really care that much about RPM.
There's one way that hasn't been mentioned yet to get more performance while reducing stress on the transmission. You're right in thinking that doing a kickdown while the engine is producing a lot of power is stressful for the tranny.
The trick is to change gears *before* the engine is producing a lot of power! If you know you're going to need power, use the shift lever to manually select a lower gear before you press on the gas. That way, the tranny will already be fully engaged in the correct gear when the power comes on.
Of course you don't want to go too crazy with this technique. The gear-selector mechanism wasn't designed to be moved 10, 20, 30 times per trip. But it sounds like you're a fairly conservative driver, and with limited use, the technique works well.
This approach is much kinder to your transmission than getting a chip.
