Question for suspension gurus: Undersprung/underdamped?

Here is something that I haven't been able to figure out. I've often read and heard of cars being described as 'undersprung' / 'underdamped' / 'oversprung' / 'overdamped' or a combination of two of the above. From a performance point of view, I know that most cars leaving the factory are undersprung and underdamped... that is not too difficult to tell. But, how does one identify they symptoms of a combination of undersprung and overdamped or oversprung and underdamped? How do you know which is the problem?
