I don't have a definitive answer yet, but I'm searching (w/ my machine
shop) through all the different 2.0/2.1/2.3L heads and trying to find the
"best" one from a modified performance standpoint.
So far the best combustion chamber design is the 1985 900T head - this is
the only c900 head to have a perfect cloverleaf design. Too bad the ports
are so frickin' small (still researching max porting and port lifting).
The 1986-1988 2.0 Turbo heads are OK, they have 2 sides of each c.chamber
with a clover-leaf shape, and 2 straight. This gives some quench area, but
not the best. Ports are reasonable in size.
The 1991-on 2.1L non-turbo head has the biggest ports and the biggest
c. chamber, but it lacks any quench area / cloverleaf features. It's just
a big dome, which isn't the best for detonation resistance. I think the
early 2.3L 9000 heads are the same way.
So the ideal heads are a 1985 with a mega-porting job (which probably isn't
possible) or the 1991+ 2.1L head with welded-in cloverleaf quench areas (can
you say $$$$) which is fairly intensive, although I read about doing that
to a racing Integra in Sport Compact Car magazine a couple years ago.
...If you switch to the 2.1/2.3 head, you should be getting more flow at all
areas of the RPM range, so that is good. Hopefully that translates directly
to more power for you. The combustion chamber is about 6cc larger on the
2.1/2.3 heads, so you will be dropping compression ratio slightly. *In
general* lowering CR means less efficiency/less power when off-boost, and
more power *potential* when on boost, higher max boost, etc. I'm not sure
if 6cc is enough to make a difference.
