I don't know why ckpaden did the water injection but I can tell you why I did it. I am sure you remember me as a MBC guy turned ECU upgrade. Well, a few months ago, my friend who bought my MBC from me thought that if my boost was brought up by the ECU upgrade, the boost cut had to be raised as well to accommodate boost spikes. We decided to install the MBC on my car and see how high it would then boost.
I tried it for a limited time, i.e. one run of about 3 secs at full boost, and found the turbo gauge to show almost full red at the fuel cut. So I decided that before I ran this kind of setup, I would prefer to have the water injection to keep in cylinder temps in check before I ever saw perdetonation. Also, I figured it would help hot weather performance as well.
The hot weather performance did improve quite a bit. Also, after the water injection installation, I wound up purchasing a new MBC and ran it for a few weeks at just below fuel cut boost pressures. I then checked my plug condition to see how it was all working together and found the plugs to be in the exact same condition as prior to the water injection and MBC.
Also, the power increase felt huge, although I am not willing to guess on the actual number. However, on my super secret test site, I was able to reach 132 mph where prior to these latest mods my best was around 126 mph, so there is a notable performance gain.
My next project is a proper boost gauge and an EGT gauge. When these are installed I will be able to give numbers on the max boost I can now achieve as well as the effect on EGT the water injection is giving me.
