...but someone (I think it was Geoff Clark) had some temp sensors wired up and reported that on his car, the diff between underbonnet temps inside or outside the inner fender (if that makes sense) were negligible as long as the car was moving, i.e. something like 2-3 deg F. Makes sense when you take in account that when you're moving at 70 mph the air flowing through the engine compartment hardly has any time to warm up.
OTOH replacing the stock set up with a cone clamped on the AMM does do away with a long and contorted intake path before the AMM. There's like 4ft and 4 90 degree bends in there before the air finally enters the AMM - and then it still has to take another few plus the IC before it enters the throttle body. Anything you can do to decrease pressure drop will help to fight turbo lag and improve throttle response - and according to Group 6 the intake snorkel set up alone was good for 20 in Hg!
If you were coming from say, an M3 and drove a Saab turbo (or -any- turbo) for the first time one of the things you'd criticize most is the lack of 'immediacy' in throttle response, and not the handful of hp you might be missing under certain conditions with the cone air filter. It's there wher you can make some good improvements that will transform the car from a driver's point of view.
A dyno run is a good diagnostic tool, but it does not tell the whole story.
