I was doing something similar not 2 weeks ago, testing backpressure to find if a 3way cat was clogged or not on a 96 SL 600 with a 6 liter V12 (a good thing to do when the new CAT is $2200). At 7000rpm there was 15psi of backpressure with a Renntech Sport muffler. That seemed high given the exhaust system it had but the car was low on power. Installed a new Cat (actually its more like 6, 4 pre cats and 2 3way, thus the price)
Tested again car had 7psi at 7000rpm, and had plenty of power. I had a O2 sensor modified to accept at 3/16 hose barb, then used some special vacuum line that takes 900+degree temps, only problem is it's $100 a yard. Ouch!
I'd like to try this sort of test on a 900T with a big waste gate like 40mm+ and a huge exhaust and see what kind of #'s there are. I think that if you can vent before the turbo, instead from before the turbine the back pressure will drop a ton, but the question is, what is the magic # for backpressure??
